Must Have Winter Car Accessories

With the onset of winter we know that you are likely to want to stay at home where it’s warm and cozy. However, this isn’t always possible. So we have written this blog to advise you on what we think are the must-have winter car accessories you should keep in your vehicle.

Firstly, and I think this should go without saying, if the roads are icy please drive carefully. After all you want to get to your destination safely, whether it is a trip to the shops or someones house.

Must have Winter Car Accessories

Ice Scraper

We highly recommend that during the winter months you keep an ice scraper on hand inside your vehicle. There is a wide variety of scrapers available on the market, but whatever you buy it is a necessity!

Always make sure you fully clear your windscreen before you set off. After all, being able to see where you’re going is quite important. If your wiper blades are leaving streaks or not clearing your windscreen effectively I also recommend buying a new set. They aren’t expensive and will help maintain visibility in even the worst conditions.

Emergency Kit

Having some sort of emergency kit in your car over winter is an essential. There are lots of unforeseen eventualities, so it’s best to be prepared in the event that you break down or get stranded.

Your basic emergency kit should include the following:

  • Warm clothing – Hat, Scarf, Gloves, Winter Jacket and Blanket
  • Phone charger, incase you need to call emergency services or breakdown/recovery.
  • Reflective triangles and high visibility jacket
  • First aid kit
  • Tyre repair kit (especially if you don’t have a spare tyre).
  • Basic tool kit, including duct tape, jump cables and a torch (with spare batteries).

Traction Material

In the event of your vehicle getting stuck, it is also wise to carry around something to help get you moving again. Sometimes you can dig yourself out (if you have a shovel), though most people probably won’t have one lying around.

Good traction materials are:

  • Sand, Grit Salt or Kitty Litter. There’s a good chance you’ll have at least one of these lying around.
  • Path De-Icer
  • Spare piece of carpet. This can be slid under your wheels to help get you going again. Worst case you can also use the car mats in your car.
