Six Spooky Halloween Drives

Have you ever been driving along a dark road on a stormy night and suddenly felt that you’re not alone in the car?
Have you ever seen a ghost or ghostly horse and carriage whilst driving along? No?
Then take a trip this Halloween weekend along one of our six spooky Halloween drives and you just might….

These Are Our Six Spooky Halloween Drives

A75, Kinmont Straight, Scotland
‘The Ghost Road’

halloween-white-woman-mist-smlThis is reputedly the most haunted highway in Scotland, spooking and scaring motorist for over 50 years.

If you believe the stories, you could see anything from screaming hags to eyeless ghouls, as well as a wide range of ghostly animals and phantom figures emerging as you drive through the mist.

Recently there’s been a story of a long distance lorry driver who was so traumatised he gave up on the haulage industry altogether. What did he see I hear you ask.
Allegedly he witnessed a huge procession of emaciated men, women and children pulling medieval handcarts along the roadside.

Stocksbridge by-pass, Sheffield, England
‘Victorian Children’

halloween-family-photoStories about this spooky stretch of single carriageway started emerging in 1989, whilst under construction. The first reports were from security guards, who reported witnessing a group of children wearing antiquated clothes playing under Pearoyd Bridge. When they went to investigate, no children could be found and the only footprints in the mud were from the security guards.

The following night the same security guards saw a monk on the bridge, when they drove closer to the hooded figure it vanished.

This isn’t just a couple security guards trying to get attention though. Since the road has been open there have been numerous reports of Victorian children playing at the roadside and the monk has even hitched a ride with several unsuspecting motorists. Would you give a spooky monk a ride this Halloween?

A9, Scotland
‘Highway Robbery’

halloween-horse-drawnRunning between Falkirk and Thurso in the north of Scotland, this road is haunted by a wide range of Victorian ghosts (or very elaborate fancy dress party-goers). The variety of reported ghouls on this stretch of road include highly ornate horse drawn carriages with wig wearing footmen and a a lone horse-rider, possibly an old highway robber still looking for his next heist.

M6 Motorway, England
‘Roman Soldiers’

halloween-roman-soldierYou may be disappointed to learn that the UK’s most haunted highway isn’t a secluded country road near an ancient battlefield or cemetery. In fact it is the longest motorway, the M6, which has seen the most ghostly sightings of any other road.

Motorists report sightings of Roman Soldiers wandering the carriageways as well as a lone lady wandering the motorway trying to hitch a ride with unsuspecting travellers. There are also reports of eyes peeking out of the bushes near the scene of an old mining disaster in Manchester.
Possibly the most disturbing reports are of a phantom lorry travelling the wrong way down the carriageway. That’s possibly the most scary experience whilst traveling, especially on Halloween.

A229, Sussex to Kent, England
‘Woman in White’

halloween-white-woman-risesThis segment of the A229 is another contender for the UK’s most haunted highway. Police have reported numerous calls from distressed motorists claiming to have run over a ‘Woman in White’, only to lose track of the body.

There is also a ghostly hitchhiker hanging around the Lower Bell pub near Maidstone. Though these reports could be due to high spirited drivers.

A541, Flintshire, Wales
‘Hanging Around’

Driving along this stretch of dark country road in North Wales could lead you into the ‘Woman in White’ (though probably not the same one as on the A229). Legend is that she died after falling down a well whilst trying to run away from her stately home to elope with a local farmer.
The farmer is also rumoured to stalk the area after hanging himself out of fear of being accused of his lovers murder.
