In a vehicle that has drum brakes as opposed to disc brakes, there are brake shoes located on the inside of the brake drum itself. When the handbrake is applied, the cable that is attached to the brake shoes is pulled and they are pressed up against the inner surface of the drum to stop the wheels from moving.
